Lorna Jackson

Artist, Cultural Advisor and Pintupi Teacher

“I teach and paint about my culture, my family, my Country… it makes me strong.”

Lorna is a proud Pintupi woman from the remote community of Kintore (Walungurru) in the Northern Territory. Lorna was born on the sand-hills west of Papunya community on the 13th of July 1971.

Lorna is a teacher at her local school, a strong community leader and talented artist.

Lorna has been a Pintupi Language teacher for over 30 years. This is an incredible bilingual initiative that started from Elders in Indigenous communities to keep their language, culture and community alive. They wanted a future where their children were educated “two ways”, in English and in Pintupi, in classrooms and on Country, learning Western science as well as Traditional Knowledge.

Lorna’s paintings tell stories about her country, culture and ancestors. She learned to paint with her father and grandfather the traditional way. The technique sees Country through a bird’s-eye view and serves as educational tools about hunting, gathering, ceremonies and navigation. Her paintings show incredible knowledge and connection to her culture, Country and ancestors.

Since starting dialysis in 2021 due to stage 5 kidney disease, Lorna is eager to find new ways to protect this Knowledge and use it to improve the health of her community. Lorna is one of the Pintupi Elders who is working closely with Tatiana in a PhD project that aims to elevate Indigenous Knowledge and improve wellbeing through food and nutrition.

Lorna is pictured in Muyin, an outstation that sits on the NT/WA border where Lorna lived for a large portion of her childhood.
